Yasss, another trend that takes me back to the ‘90s! As I’ve already stated here before, I’m a huge fan of the nineties, so last year when I saw the slip dresses were making a comeback I must confess I got excited and although I still don’t any ( 🙁 ) I do want to join the party, especially seeing how many options available are out there.
Whenever I think of these lingerie inspired dresses I can’t help to think of the iconic 90’s supermodel Kate Moss or Carrie Bradshaw from Sex & the City. They all rocked this trend back in the day and now, celebs like Emma Roberts, the Jenner sisters and Rihanna are helping to bring it back.
I grouped five different ways to wear the slip dress in 2016 without looking like you stepped out of your house in a rush and forgot to change your nightgown in the process.
The best way to break with the natural sexiness of slip dresses is to contrast them with edgy rocker or grunge pieces. This could be leather jackets, tartan shirts tied around the waist, denim jackets and flat ankle boots. Oh, and don’t forget the messy hair and Courtney Love attitude!
Keeping it simple is always a valid option. If not, ask Calvin Klein, whose brand used to master the less is more philosophy. Clean lines, minimalist jewelry and classic footwear (preferably in black or nude) will make you look refreshingly sleek and elegant.
Few things say “the 90’s” more than a slip dress with a t-shirt layered on it –or a turtleneck if it’s cold. It was in every music video, TV show and movie from those days (bonus point if the dress had a daisy pattern!). It’s a fun, youthful take on the dress that’s originally thought to be provocative. Just be careful not to add more 90’s elements to your outfit tho, or it will look too costum-y.
When a dress is directly inspired by lingerie, you can expect nothing but sexy. Silky fabrics such as satin looks AND feels sensual to the eye and touch. Lace details and spaghetti straps are also part of this killer combo. If you’re more classic, a LBSD (little black slip dress) will be a timeless addition to your wardrobe, for sure!
Slip dresses can be quite intimidating for daytime but just one magic word can make you change your mind: layering. As said above, slip dresses and t-shirts or turtlenecks are cool and playful, but I understand that’s not everyone’s alley. First of all, make sure the dress itself has a matte finish. Now let your layering creativity take over and throw on a boyfriend blazer, or a denim jacket, a bomber jacket or even a sweatshirt that covers the whole bottom part and shows only the hem. It-girl-bonus if combined with sporty sneakers. 😉
